The term soft shell is used to describe garments that combine partial or full water resistance with partial or full wind-breaking ability.
Wordans is known as one of the top Canadian wholesale garment distributors, and one of the many reasons involves the sheer variety of items that we are pleased to offer at highly discounted price points. From hoodies and sweaters to polo shirts and exercise apparel, we always try to keep the needs of our client base covered.
There are nonetheless certain product lines that tend to stand out from the others. One prime example is our collection of men's and women'ssoftshell jackets. What makes these items so desirable? What unique attributes do they have to offer? How can consumers make the most informed decisions? The aim of this article is to adequately address each of these equations.
First things first
It only makes sense to first begin by addressing the proverbial elephant in the room. What exactly is "softshell" from a clothing perspective?
We can think of this type of fabric as a means to bridge the gap between a lightweight jacket and a completely waterproof garment (sometimes known as a "hardshell" jacket). In other words, such a configuration is intended to offer the best of both worlds while still providing a significant amount of comfort.
However, we should mention another point before moving on. These materials associated with a softer shell are often believed to provide impressive levels of insulation, or to be capable of completely repelling water. These observations are not always the case.
In the simplest of terms, softshell fabrics tend to be lightweight, flexible, and able to pull sweat away from the body. This is the reason why they are often selected by those who regularly perform strenuous activities. Woven polyester and nylon are two common materials that are used when manufacturing such a garment.
What conditions are these garments best suited for?
It is once again important to stress that these jackets are not necessarily designed for below-zero temperatures (although they can indeed be used as an additional insulating layer against the elements).
They are much more suitable for cooler environments that are not extremely wet. Most individuals also prefer soft-shell fabrics when they are exerting themselves outdoors (hiking or taking a jog on a cool autumn evening are two such scenarios).
Having said this, soft-shell jackets still offer more protection when compared to other types of garments such as fleeces or even mid-weight hoodies. Such a "middle-of-the-road" attribute therefore makes such materials an ideal solution that can be used throughout the year when outside conditions are not overly harsh.
How water resistant are these jackets?
We mentioned earlier that soft-shell exterior garments are not waterproof. However, there can still be exceptions to this rule. Some models have been specifically manufactured with this important metric in mind. One relevant example can be seen in our SOL Transformer jacket with removable hood and sleeves found within the current Wordans collection.
The main takeaway point here involves what the jacket in question is intended to be used for. When referring to the model highlighted above, it is an ideal solution for everyday outdoor activities that require an adequate level of protection from rain without being forced to sacrifice comfort or style.
It is also quite common for any type of soft-shell jacket intended to repel water to come with a layer of protection referred to as durable water-repellent (DWR) coating. This is meant to address light and moderate precipitation. However, heavy rain can still cause the jacket to become waterlogged.
The other option is to purchase a soft-shell jacket that has been outfitted with a breathable membrane placed immediately behind the outer fabric. This acts as an additional barrier of protection, essentially making the garment waterproof nearly to hardshell standards. Such a configuration may be better suited for individuals who intend to undertake more challenging (or lengthy) outdoor adventures (such as hiking up a mountain or camping for a few days at a time).
What about the wind?
Anyone who resides in Canada is well aware that cold temperatures are not the only concerns that need to be addressed. Wind can play an equally important role. Dry wind can quickly wick sweat away from the body, in some cases resulting in dehydration or even hypothermia. This is why it is important to choose a jacket that offers reasonable protection.
The good news is that the vast majority of modern softshell jackets have been engineered with this consideration in mind. While the fabric itself is somewhat porous, it can still offer a substantial amount of protection from the wind.
Once again, it might also be possible to purchase a variant that contains an extra layer beneath the outer material that blocks the wind to a greater degree. The only possible trade-off here is that fully blocking the wind may impede the ability of the jacket to moderate the body temperature of the wearer (as heat is more likely to remain trapped inside).
Ergonomics
There is perhaps nothing worse than purchasing a high-quality jacket only to suddenly realize that it is nearly impossible to perform physical activities. This can sometimes occur with older models of hardshell jackets. Thankfully, users will not be impeded by such a situation when working with the team at Wordans.
Our line of soft-shell outerwear has been designed with the active user in mind. For instance, the Nano Gents Jacket designed by Malfini boasts three layers of flexible fabric, Velcro adjustment straps, and reversed coil zippers. All of these features essentially signify that mobility will never be sacrificed for comfort or protection.
Warmth
Believe it or not, the vast majority of soft-shell jackets are actually warmer than their hardshell alternatives. This is primarily due to the fabrics that are used. Materials such as polyester and nylon are capable of trapping a significant amount of air between their fibers. Air is one of the best natural insulators, so the wearer can remain toasty even when the mercury outside begins to fall.
Those who are looking for even more protection could instead opt for a jacket that contains a layer of fleece underneath. Fleece will once again serve to keep the cold at bay. It is a good idea to check which models provide such an option before making a final purchase.
Common questions
Now that we have taken a look at the main characteristics of these jackets, let's conclude by addressing a handful of questions.
Are these jackets heavier than rain gear?
As a general rule of thumb, soft-shell garments will be slightly heavier. However, this does not detract from their comfort.
Can these jackets be easily cleaned?
Similar to other garments made of materials such as nylon and polyester, cleaning is a cinch. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions.
Can I customize my softshell outerwear?
